Personal Professional Development Planning

Purpose

To stimulate reflection on the protégé’s career plans and act as a focus for discussions on these plans with their mentor.

Approximate Time

At least 30 minutes

Resources Needed

- Both partners
- A copy of worksheet 19 for each participant
- Reflective journal

Steps

Protégés use the questions on the worksheet to reflect on their career goals. Protégés record their reflections in their journal for discussions with their mentor.

Purpose

To practice interpersonal skills required by the protégé for a specific purpose.

Reviewing our Relationship

Purpose

To practice interpersonal skills required by the protégé for a specific purpose.

Approximate Time

Up to 30 minutes

- Reflective journals

Steps

Ask each participant to consider the following. Use the reflective journal to record initial thoughts.
  • In your role as a mentor or protégé, identify any significant moment(s) during the past three months.

  • Describe what happened, why it was significant and what impact it had on you.

  • Discuss these reflections with your partner.

  • Where do you plan to go from here in your mentoring relationship?

  • Where do you plan to go from here with your goals?

Purpose

To provide a framework for feedback discussions to increase the mentor’s and protégés knowledge of themselves and their partner.

Purpose

To stimulate discussion on helpful and unhelpful attitudes.

Now and Then

Purpose

To reflect on the past and present and where participants would like to be in five years.

- A copy of worksheet 24 for each participant

Steps

This activity can be conducted as a self-reflective activity by mentors or protégés, by mentoring pairs during the course of their relationship, or can be used as part of the training program.

Personal Task Audit

Purpose

To provide a framework with which protégés can compare job or personal goals and the time allocated to achieving these in any given week. This activity can be completed during the mid-cycle training program, or by protégés at any stage during the relationship.

Approximate Time

At least 30 minutes

- Both partners
- A copy of worksheet 25 for each participant

Steps

Protégés use the worksheet to complete a personal task audit and, with their mentor’s help, plan to use their time more effectively to achieve their goals.
