Currents 2006 Keynote Speaker: Paula Berger

After twenty-five years in the field, Paula understands the technical communication profession—the trends, skills, tools, problems. Running a business for years taught her to focus on customers (members!), monitor finances, analyze issues, evaluate alternatives, make decisions, build consensus, and get things done. Paula's current job in association management has brought her a new perspective on what organizations can accomplish and how they operate most effectively.

This combination of experiences has given Paula a clear vision of what STC can be—a global force to lead our profession and offer valuable benefits to members—and an understanding of
how to change and strengthen the organization
so we can fulfill this potential.

STC service, honors, and awards
Paula is the STC First Vice President. Previously, she served on the transformation committees for communications, education, and membership. Paula was on the associate fellows nominating committee and she has judged many international and local competitions.

Paula was an annual conference stem manager twice and delivered a speaker training session for several years. She has spoken at STC events worldwide for seventeen years.

Paula is a past president of the STC Boston chapter. She also managed the regional publications competition, wrote the bylaws, and a lot more. While working in Europe, she was newsletter editor for the STC TransAlpine chapter and a committee member and judge for the first TransEuropean competition.

Paula is a fellow and received a distinguished chapter service award in 1993.

Professional Experience
Paula works for an association management company as director of communication and as managing director of a high-tech industry association.

For nineteen years, Paula was a principal of SOLUTIONS, a technical communication company that produced conferences, delivered seminars, and provided consulting. She managed the consulting area, with up to twenty concurrent projects and a staff of fifty. She also developed seminars and conference programs by studying industry trends, researching emerging technologies, evaluating new tools, and collaborating with industry experts. Paula taught courses at public sessions, client sites, and universities.

In 2001, Paula became an independent consultant and worked with clients on interface design, localization, Web site design, and documentation. For eighteen months, Paula worked in Italy with a consulting company.
